How can this case be resolved without a lawyer?

My brother was blamed and arrested for burglary because one of his so-called "friends" asked him to pawn a tv that my brother umed belonged to said "friend". Said tv was reported stolen and therefore a warrant was issued for his arrest to which the police came to the house and arrested him. Upon arriving at the station my brother was told that the tv was tied into 35 burglaries in the area all of which they are trying to pin on him. My brother has myself and his girlfriend as an alibi during the times of these "alleged" burglaries. However, since he was the idiot who didn't use good judgment in helping out a "friend" by going into the pawnshop and pawning the tv under what he thought was a legal transaction, they are trying to charge him with this. His bail was $50k and lowered to $25k and he is out on bail under a payment plan. He was scheduled for a pretrial hearing tomorrow but that's been cancelled and moved to circuit court. We don't have enough money for a lawyer. My questions are this: Can I (no legal exp) represent him and/or can he request a lie detector test to prove he is indeed innocent of what they're charging him with but yet guilty of the lesser crime of using extremely BAD judgment? Please advise, thanks.
